BIO
Karine Guyon is a Montreal based artist. Karine Guyon has lived and exhibited in many major Canadian cities. Her paintings can be found in both private and public collections across Canada including the Porter Housing Society Collection, Vancouver, BC and the Simon Fraser University Art Collection, Vancouver, BC. In 2015 Karine Guyon was awarded an Emerging Artist Grant in Visual Art from the Ontario Arts Council. The same year, some of her paintings from the ‘Geometrics’ series were selected, by Canadian painter Sky Glabush, for a group exhibition called ‘Thames Art Gallery Juried Exhibition 2015’, supported by the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. From 2015 to 2017, Karine Guyon was awarded several private art grants for her collaborative multi-media art installation entitled ‘Kaleidoscopy’. Her work is always very textured and recognizable through her use of bold and chaotic mark making and surface scratching.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Color is chemical energy…By looking at the ultraviolet part of the color spectrum, I noticed that ultraviolet colors were capable of absorbing, reflecting and storing light. This resulted in creating paintings rendering of light and energy.
Always looking for creative innovations, in 2016, I started working on this body of work, which incorporates ultraviolet and invisible florescent raw pigments, with traditional painting mediums such as oil paints and beeswax. Inspired by the underground electronic music scene, the idea was to take something that belongs to a psychedelic culture and fuse it into avant-garde visual experiences in virtue of abstract paintings.
My color experiments turned into the research of the relationships between colors, the absence of colors, white light and the absence of light. Process based, each painting is created under both the visible and short-wave spectrum, resulting in abstract paintings viewable in white or ultraviolet light.
